Today, we had a fantastic time making flower and leaf wreaths using colored card, crepe paper, glitter, and gemstones. The session was filled with creativity, laughter, and the joy of hands-on activity. Participants cut out their own floral and leaf shapes, arranged them into beautiful wreaths, and added a touch of sparkle with decorative elements.
Beyond being a fun and engaging craft, this activity had several important benefits from an occupational therapy perspective:
1. Fine Motor Skills & Dexterity
Cutting out shapes, handling small decorations, and assembling the wreath required controlled hand movements, promoting hand-eye coordination, finger strength, and dexterity—all essential for maintaining independence in daily tasks such as buttoning clothes or handling utensils.
2. Cognitive Stimulation & Problem-Solving

Participants had to plan their designs, decide on colors, and work out how to arrange their flowers and leaves. This encouraged decision-making, spatial awareness, and creative thinking, helping to maintain cognitive function.
3. Emotional Wellbeing & Self-Expression
Crafting is a great way to express emotions and individuality. Whether through color choices or arrangement styles, each wreath became a unique reflection of the creator. The act of creating something beautiful fosters a sense of accomplishment, boosting confidence and mood.
4. Sensory Stimulation
The textures of crepe paper, smooth card, and the sparkle of glitter provided tactile stimulation, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals with sensory processing difficulties or those living with dementia. Engaging multiple senses helps keep the brain active and engaged.
5. Social Connection & Shared Experience

Working together in a group, chatting about design choices, and sharing materials encourages social interaction and reduces isolation. The activity provided a relaxed and supportive environment for conversation, laughter, and connection.
6. Relaxation & Mindfulness
The repetitive nature of cutting, arranging, and decorating promoted focus and mindfulness, offering a calming effect similar to meditation. This is particularly valuable for reducing stress and enhancing overall mental wellbeing.
A Simple Activity with Lasting Impact
While making flower and leaf wreaths may seem like a simple craft, the benefits extend far beyond the final product. Occupational therapy-based activities like this help to maintain physical skills, cognitive function, emotional wellbeing, and social engagement, all of which are crucial for a high quality of life.

This session was a wonderful reminder of how creativity can be both therapeutic and joyful. We look forward to more engaging activities that bring people together and support wellbeing through meaningful, hands-on experiences!
